The image above from Christoph Niemann’s brilliant blog Abstract Sunday perfectly illustrates the frustration I experience while trying, trying, TRYING to fall asleep.

After an inspiring and invigorating meetup with my picture book critique group last night, I came home at 10:40pm and crawled into bed.

One of the recurring lines of conversation among my critique group revolves around how seemingly impossible it is to GET AN AGENT and so it was not surprising to me that my impossible dream revolved around a completely f****d up excel spreadsheet of mailing addresses which stood between me and getting those seasonal marketing postcards out to agents, ADs and editors. No matter how hard I tried to resolve it, I couldn’t manage to correct the unceasing changes in addresses wrought by corporate buyouts, downsizing and the morphing of editors to agents and vice versa. 

The downside of a sleepless night is a day of abstracted thinking – of course, that is the upside as well – a sense of being unmoored and vulnerable. A perfect starting point for chucking the spreadsheet and running with the creative dogs. Marketing, schmarketing…
