Post-Breakup: How to Begin Moving On

 April 3, 2022

Breaking up is not an easy thing to do. While some feel relieved about ending the relationship and getting their freedom back, many feel shattered and in pain. People also deal with the situation differently. Some are quick to get over it, while others find it hard to move on. If you recently broke up with your special someone and feel like you won’t survive, know that you can get through it in time, although it may be challenging. Of course, you need to help yourself heal and get better eventually. Here are some tips on how to do that.

Let yourself grieve

Moving on is a process. At first, it may be hard to wrap your mind around the fact that it’s over. Once it starts to sink in, you begin to feel anger and pain. It’s normal, so allow yourself to release those emotions. However, do not resort to things that could make things worse or harm you, like alcohol or drugs. If you feel like being alone or want to cry by yourself, then do so. But do not let this drag for too long. Pick yourself up, and start moving forward even with baby steps.

Accept the situation

Accepting that it is over may not happen overnight. Nonetheless, you should find the courage to tell yourself that it’s over. Only then will you be able to begin the process of healing and moving on.

Find things that keep you occupied

Having plenty of free time lets your mind reminisce on the memories you had with your ex. You might even find yourself analyzing what went wrong. Keep yourself busy, and find things that you enjoy. For example, get a new hobby, like cooking, dancing, crafting, or painting. You may also read books, but be sure that they would be helpful instead of making you feel down. If you are asking yourself what books should I read after a breakup?, find those that will motivate you to move forward after a broken relationship and help you be a better version of yourself. Stories about breakups and how people survived them would also help you realize that you are not alone. Those who went through the same thing survived, and so can you.

Get support from closest friends and family

Although there may be times you want to be alone, do not drown yourself in loneliness. Instead, surround yourself with people who love you most, like your closest friends and family. Go out now and then to have fun.

Avoid any contact with your ex

It is tempting to contact your ex to save the relationship. However, if you already tried to work things out, and you still ended up taking separate ways, it’s not good to reach out because it will slow down your healing process. So, even if you did not get the closure you needed, let it go, as seeing or communicating with the person can make everything fresh and painful again. Moving on after a breakup is not easy, but by helping yourself and with the support of your loved ones, you will be okay in time.
